+ What projects do researchers work on?
Our research projects on social cohesion focus on improving the conditions of refugees, combating homelessness, building community resilience and social inclusion, and exploring migration and multiculturalism as a pathway to social cohesion. They are an avenue to create an inclusive atmosphere for mutual understanding and inclusion in Australian society.
Domestic violence has a chain of effects upon family and community at large. The results of domestic violence include but not limited to an untimely death, homelessness, youth restiveness, destabilisation of social structure and so on. The wanton consequences of domestic violence on marriages, health and well-being and economic situation need to be abated.
Our research projects in this stream identify the causes and impacts of domestic violence, and promote credible solutions to combat the menace.
+ What are "Stories that Gladden the Heart" About?
Stories that Gladden the Heart is a project which aims to alleviate the struggles and isolation of women who are experiencing mental health challenges in Melbourne, through storytelling. Due to childbirth, stress, economic situations, COVID-related isolation and domestic violence, women can easily exhibit symptoms of anxiety, depression, panic attacks or trauma reactions, on a short term or long term basis.
Women with the above mental health conditions often face so many difficulties in society, including social ostracism, rejection, stigma and shame. The effects of social stereotype often silence women, affect their relationships, and sometimes make them refrain from seeking help.
+ How many refugees does Australia accept each year?
In the financial year of 2019-20, Australia granted refugee status to 14,993 people, either through resettlement from other countries or granting protection to people who had applied for asylum in Australia.
